Ha! The dreaded self-description, wherein we all manifest some illumination... I hope that you'll read all the way through!
I'm a sciency guy (there are a lot of them on this particular site, I suspect) with an appreciation for artistic endeavours - yes, the two can coexist. I have a strong passion for gardening/horticulture, including an interest in growing as much of my own food as I can, which stems from a strong ethic to live sustainably.
I'm a transplant from the Australian mainland and I have a beautiful rural acreage close to Hobart. The plan is to build my own home in an environmentally-friendly manner as possible, although I've recently been distracted by buying a neighbouring cottage which is in serious need of renovation. Is it weird that I'm actually enjoying it?! No, don't answer that.
I'm an enthusiastic reader, a life-long learner and a bit of a politically-opinionated bleeding heart. I have so many interests and hobbies that I probably would type for an hour trying to list them. Even so, I place great value in the enjoyment of simple pleasures, and of simple living. Perhaps I'll expand on this another time if no other fields magically pop up to accommodate this part of the process.
What else? I'm a little uncomfortable about the idea of talking about myself, even though the computer is telling me that I should, and I'm not sure that I know how to explain why people should "get to know" me without sounding like a prat. However, because I am a mix of tree-hugging hippy and science geek living in an area with a low density of suitable female company, it seems that needs must, hence my presence here after less than stellar success elsewhere...
What am I seeking? Humour, intelligence, confidence, and pragmatism. Earthy cerebralness. And a love for nature/the environment.
The past is the past and I only look back when I am looking forward. And between me and my Geminian other half of I have everything I need to move forward - I'm hoping that you have figured out that you do too! :-)

Now that I have a space just for this I am somewhat at a loss as to where to start...
Intelligence and a sense of humour come first. Someone who enjoys both rigorous intellectual discussion, and companionable silences. And The Hunting of the Snark (is that an exotic jungle beastie?). A girl who thinks that sharing in the preparing of a meal can be an enjoyable activity!
Someone who can appreciate a disparate panoply of subjects, from art, to architecture, to history, to philosophy, to environmental sustainability and gentle living. Someone who's happy to sit watching a thunderstorm one day, and catch a movie or theatre performance the next, and then on the way home discuss what the Beatles, Stanley Kubrick, Red Dwarf, and Spongebob have in common.
Chemistry, of course. Independent. Someone who knows the difference between Latin and African geography would be handy. A lateral thinker. Kind. Mischievous. Doesn't mind a few lines on the page and around the eyes, and knows how to read between them. Who can match me in backing a trailer, setting a campfire, doing a cryptic crossword.
Will happily correspond with anyone, not just from Australia - the world is, after all, a small place when all is said and done, and imagination and determination are wonderful things. And 13:13 is not that unlucky.
Oo, this is hard... Who really orders a potential friend/companion using drop-down menus? Does it actually work? I'll add more later.
