About him
After twenty years focused on academic research, I’m beginning a new chapter. I’d like to use my experience in the field of disability to write practical self-help books and to mentor disabled people. I enjoy challenges, new ideas and experiences that broaden my horizons, and I’m looking forward to having more time for all three.
I returned to Cambridge in 2024 after nearly fifty years away. Although the city has changed enormously since my student days, I still find its energy and beauty exhilarating. I sometimes think Samuel Johnson’s famous observation about London could equally apply to Cambridge — there always seems to be something new to discover.
Family loyalty has always mattered greatly to me. Before returning to Cambridge, I spent many years caring for my mother, to whom I owed an enormous debt of gratitude. That experience deepened qualities I value highly: commitment, resilience and an appreciation of what really matters in life.
Away from work, I particularly enjoy beautiful scenery, walking, cultural events and international travel. In Cambridge, I appreciate the open views from my home and enjoy the Botanic Garden and the city’s parks. I also visit London regularly, and recent highlights have included the orchid display at Kew, Wimbledon, concerts at the Royal Albert Hall and trips on the Thames.
Travel remains one of my greatest pleasures. I usually take several international holidays each year and am particularly drawn to coastlines, mountains and lakes. Closer to home, I’ve also greatly enjoyed exploring the Norfolk coast. There is still a great deal of the world I would like to see — and I think many of the best experiences are even better when shared with someone whose company you genuinely enjoy.

I’m attracted to qualities such as empathy, warmth, resourcefulness, a positive outlook and a genuine interest in the world. For me, a good relationship grows from mutual compatibility, trust and genuinely enjoying one another’s company.
With the right person, I’d hope to share many of the things I already enjoy — travel, beautiful places, cultural events and simply spending time together — while also being open to discovering new interests through her.
