About him
This part is there to help you decide who to contact: not wasting the time of people that don't suit is just as important as attracting 'fans'. Of course I'm a splendid fellow--I respect women as equals, I'm kind, helpful, honest and fun. But so are thousands of others; you need facts that are specific to me.
Why join New Scientist Connect? I have plenty of friends of both sexes, but seek more who share seriously scientific interests. Sex is not the main point of the exercise, but if some nice lady wants to sleep with me too, fine, but at my age don't expect too much. I'm not into one-night stands: what's worth doing once is worth doing again.
Profession: Retired lecturer in linguistic science, still do some language teaching (have taught English, French, Dutch, Chinese, Japanese).
Things I find fun: Reading translating and writing poetry, cycling, gardening, scrabble, chess, chatting, keeping up with human knowledge.
Things I shun: Getting drunk, gambling, hunting.
My deep beliefs: It's wrong to pretend to know what one doesn't know. This makes me a godless rationalist, as were Mum, Dad and 3 grandparents, and rules out such beliefs as post-modernism, astrology, Freudian psychoanalysis, homeopathy, feng-shui and the like.

Love life: Deserted by wife 1973. Long-term 'open' relationship with E, love of my life, from 1974 till her death; E and I both had several other lovers, with no deceptions, no one-night stands. Two girlfriends since, some celibate periods. Prof R Winston once said on TV that ALL men feel sexual jealousy: he's wrong, I don't. Nor did E. Ladies who desire a jealous lover must seek elsewhere.
'Baggage' not to be discarded: 2 daughters, 3 grandsons, a sister, ghost of E.
About his ideal match
I'm not on the site to find The One, but if I were this is what she'd be like: remember this is just an ideal: I can be good friends with people who differ from it.
She will like to share my bed, on a long-term and non-exclusive basis; if she has other lovers she'll tell me. She won't resent time I spend with friends and relations; she'll like meeting mine and want me to meet hers.
Not fussy about food, she'll eat what I cook; she likes trying new things. She is not addicted to alcohol, drugs, gambling or shoes. She rides a bicycle, and wouldn't want to be dependent on a car. She'll like travelling with me and will join me in learning and using the local languages. She enjoys chats about technical stuff in her own field, in mine and in others.
She is kind to people, and to animals, without confusing the two. She is responsible, concerned for the environment and posterity. She dislikes dishonesty, bullying, home-wrecking, irresponsibility and cruelty. She sees nothing sinful in abortion, blasphemy, homosexuality or embryonic stem cell research. For her, moral values are more a code to live by than a basis for judging others.
She is calm, uninhibited, assertive, never seeks to dominate others: her position in any 'pecking order' is to stay outside of it.
