About him
I run a small research station in the Wet Tropics of Queensland - have done so for some 26 years now - and considered quite nuts by the locals (why is this guy going around spraying weeds and planting trees??). Very involved in the climate change issues.. not exactly the most cheerful subject. A considerable amount of my time is spent supervising volunteers and students and getting our self-sufficiency program up and running (sort of permaculture).
Interested in most (probably too many! ) things (except conventional sports and cars) - Good cook - get lots of practice tutoring young volunteers and students who have never cooked before. Fairly catholic tastes in music (but don't like grunge and rap!) - play mouth organ (way out of practice).
Physically - I'm in robust health - can keep up with most 35 year olds...
Not a great talker (probably talked too much in the past as a uni lecturer!). Affectionate. Love spending time outdoors - but sometimes need to be dragged away from whatever I'm doing.. we have such wonderful and often deserted beaches here (and coral)! .. (sigh!.......) - and love giving massages...
About his ideal match
MPM (my perfect match ) must be able to relocate - as I'm the fixed object. MPM must want to leave the urban rat-race and like to live in a very beautiful coastal/mountain environment (with fantastic unoccupied beaches) . Prefer someone with scientific background and someone who doesn't mind working with young folk (17-26). A passion for environment, animals and self-sufficiency would be fantastic. Helps if you can leave your i-phone behind too .. we don't have mobile coverage! Makes for a far calmer existence!!
Sadly we have become so cossetted by our culture - that it seems that the idea of living a self-sufficient and intellectually challenging lifestyle in a beautiful landscape has almost become anathema ("But I miss Starbucks!"). I would have thought that some New Scientist readers would have jumped at the chance ... but not so far :< Be the first!
Physically capable and in good health - this place can require some serious energy output! - being moderately extrovert is no handicap! Practical. Like the outdoors. Shouldn't be afraid of showing affection and having a tolerance for the often eccentric people who pass through this place (!). A SENSE OF HUMOUR IS ESSENTIAL!!
A scientific background would help a lot, as does having good people skills - (mine are fair to middling), as well as having a somewhat anti-establishment mind set!
There are so many things to do here - many lifetimes worth.. looking for someone who loves our only planet! and wants to be a collaborator as well as being a life partner. (hey, why else would I be looking in New Scientist Connect!)
Oh.. and we have no mobile service and the world's slowest internet (the joys of being rural!!) ... so my lack of looking at the website really means lack of opportunity!! Don't give up...
